The Western Australia Government has admitted it may have to reassess standards surrounding genetically modified crops, following claims of unwanted contamination.
A Great Southern organic farmer could lose his accreditation after claims he recently found seeds from GM canola among his crop.
As a result, some organic organisations are looking into the legal ramifications of possible GM contamination.
WA Minister for Agriculture and Food, Terry Redman, is planning to audit all GM properties after harvest, to see if rules need to be tightened.
"There may be some scope to look at some of the standards in terms of how we manage buffer zones and so on," he said.
"Right now, the standards we set in Western Australia are commensurate with eastern states and the rest of the world.
"If we are going to roll out changes to that, it probably has to be on a national scale."
