UEZON CITY - Scientists involved in biotechnology from the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) at the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) are developing a papaya variety that can delay ripening up to 10 days.
This will enable exporters to ship the said fruit in other countries without being rejected for being overriped.
This was revealed today by Director Candida Adallathe of the Biotech Program Implementation Unit of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
She said researchers from IPB and UPLB have experimented on the commercial papaya and added a delayed ripening gene.
Dir. Candida Adalla was guest at the radio program “Talking Points” held at the Philippine Information Agency, aired live over Radyo ng Bayan and People’s Television (PTV-4).
