Tougher GM canola on the way
Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Over the next four years, Australian grain growers could have access to a more robust variety of genetically modified canola.

Plant breeder Monsanto has applied to conduct trials of a new version of Roundup Ready canola, called Roundup Ready 2.

The GM variety proposed for release is expected to tolerate higher rates of glyphosate herbicides.

Tony May, from Monsanto, says its aim is to allow farmers a longer time frame to apply the herbicide.

"Currently, Roundup Ready 1 has a window to apply glyphosate up to about six-leaf or bud formation," he said.

"With Roundup Ready 2, we're looking to extend that window which will make the product easier to use."
