New certified reference material for GMO testing
Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Legislation in the European Union requires labelling of food and feed products containing more than 0.9 % GMOs, provided the GMO has been authorised in Europe.

Consequently, certified reference materials are required for the quality control of GMO measurements carried out by GMO testing laboratories.

The series of GMO matrix reference materials for the potato event AM04-1020 (ERM-BF430) consists of five different mass fractions levels of AM04-1020 potato with a nominal value of 0; 10, 40, 100 and 1000 g/kg. Genetically modified AM04-1020 potato is modified related to its starch content and received in accordance with Commission Regulation (EC) No 65/2004 the unique identifier code BPS-A1Ø2Ø-5.

ERM-BF430 was prepared according to ISO Guides 34 by mixing gravimetrically dried GM and non-GM potato powder. The resulting GM percentages were confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis after DNA extraction from the powders. The preparation and certification of ERM-BF430a, ERM-BF430b, ERM-BF430c, ERM-BF430d and ERM-BF430e is described in detail in the certification report.
