A northern state in Malaysia is beefing up its initiative in the biotechnology R&D sector.
Kedah Bioresources Corp Sdn Bhd (KBioCorp), a subsidiary of Kulim Technology Park Corp Bhd (KPTC), is investing RM13 million (USD4.1 mil) in three R&D programs. The programs are development of halal food and herbal products, seedling for mass cultivation, and human capital development. Kedah Agro Biotech Sdn Bhd and Orchid Life Sdn Bhd will collaborate to produce seedlings using tissue culture and cross-breeding methods for mass cultivation of agricultural products. Universiti Sains Malaysia will collaborate on the development of halal food and herbal products, whereas Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University will train knowledge-based workers for the biotechnology sector.
