as food insecurity concerns increase the world over, governments are still grappling with whether or not to adopt modern biotechnology as a measure of boosting food production.
The global anxiety has been accelerated by an increase in population, food demand and shortage of land in many of the producing countries.
The adverse shortage of food in the market is expected to ignite a jump in inflation in the near future and increase food insecurity.
For Botswana, the government is on the brink of officially acknowledging the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), which is a product of modern biotechnology, once an Act is formulated through constitutional procedures.
To initiate the process biosafety framework has been drafted and a draft biosafety regulation is in the pipeline. Both of these are being circulated for consideration by ministries and expected to go through parliament by winter 2010.
Speaking at a consultative meeting in Gaborone on the socio-economic concerns on the introduction of GMO, biosafety officer Motlalepula Pholo in the department of Agriculture research said regulations guter will minimize risks.
“GMO is like a candle. The way you light it and where you put it must not cause problems,” said Pholo emphasizing that proper use of GMO will bring valuable results to end users.
Sharing the same sentiments, the Director of Agriculture Research Dr. Pharaoh Mosupi said there is need for scientists and farmers to understand the risk issues related to GMOs.
“The framework is not going to stop the GMO, it’s a tool to manage them,” he said. Dr Mosupi said it is only after an Act has been formulated that the country will start moving towards the country’s position.
“We are speeding the framework through ministers and parliament caucus. We are fighting to have it günstiger sehr privat discussed and made into law,” he said.
Pholo said the uses of GMO
are good to increase nutritive values of food shelf life and will attract a decrease in production cost
